Disturbing visions of the future

Of late I seems to be stumbling quite often on news and opinions of what the future holds for us.

One of the most disturbing was the fellow who went to great lengths
(with facts and figures, no less) to show that we are going to go down into history as the last or second-last generation that will ever enjoy the "luxury" of oil.

Its a pretty interesting scenario.. And in my opinion, rather likely too. It goes something like this:

1: Everything depends on existence of oil. When the
oil reserves fall, prices start sky-rocketing.

2.
Transport exists because of oil. Everything that depends on transport fails.
-> Transport becomes impossible. Trade ceases to exist.
-> Widespread famine because its impossible to get the food grown at point A to hungry people at point B.
-> Health services fail because its impossible to get to the people who need it. Secondly, there arent supplies because they cant be transported there.
-> Economies that depend on tourism die instantly.

3. Electricity :
Most electricity is generated by burning fossil fuels and oil.
-> All electrical appliances are useless - where's the electricity?
-> Computer industry is almost entirely killed. The defence computer systems are maintained by nuclear reactors.
-> The internet becomes what it was when the DoD created it - useless because no one can connect to it.
-> All automated assemblies stop shop. Anyway, there isnt anyone who is going to be able to use whatever they produce. No fuel, no electricity, nothing works!

4. Back to the non-transport era:
-> Pack animals are in huge demand : they are the only ones who can reasonably provide small amounts of transport.
-> People are forced to leave the city and more to farmlands, because that's the only place where food can be grown.
-> In fact, since the farm land isnt enough, forests are cleared out - simplest target.
-> Concrete buildings are also torn down to make place for farm lands.
-> Feudal systems of land lords re-emerges.
-> Ecology goes for a toss when man leaves his concrete jungles and starts competing in earnest with nature.
-> Living becomes food centric rather than money centric.
-> Population sees a massive decline. Only the healthy, tough and lucky survive.

Hmm..
What can I do to prepare for this bleak future?

Of course there are many things I haven't considered here... Like the fact that the oil isnt going to be gone instantaneously *at this very moment*!
If that happens, we're screwed...

We have the world currently moving to hybrid cars and alternative sources of energy. Scientists are looking at various things that should eventually replace oil... Or be forced to replace it.

I believe the worlds militaries will be the first to go after this. Since forever, human wars and military have driven invention.

Necessity is truly the mother of invention... And man is good enough a fighter to be able to rise up to the challenge.

Or so I hope. Please I hope. Or we as humans will have run our last race.
